Vice Ganda says sorry to journalist Jessica Soho on Wednesday on It’s Showtime

During his concert “I-Vice Ganda Mo ‘Ko sa Araneta” last May 17, Vice poked fun at Soho’s weight in a sketch about celebrities and bold stars. The sketch was uploaded in YouTube and went viral since and raging netizens about Vice’s tasteless joke.

Vice Ganda revealed that he had a meeting with the top management of ABS-CBN and told them that he wanted to say personally apologize to Soho.

Vice said he called Soho on Wednesday morning to say he’s sorry but the latter said she’s not in the mood to talk about it.

Is it okay po if I will call you later, tomorrow or some other day?’ Sabi niya ‘I don’t think so,’” he narrated.

Jessica Soho, on the other hand, released her statement earlier this morning.

Vice clarifies “rape joke”

Rape is not funny

The co-journalists of Jessica Soho from the Kapuso network expressed their disappointment about Vice Ganda’s joke among which is Arnold Clavio who berated the comedian in his radio program this morning:

Si Nancy Binay noon, tapos si Jessica Soho,” he was quoted as saying.

Kapuso journalist Jessica Soho bares her side in response to the public apology made by comedian Vice Ganda on Wednesday regarding the “gang rape” joke he made.

“I acknowledge the public apology given by Vice Ganda, by way of his TV program.

I sincerely hope and pray that this was done with the purest intentions and determination to put this issue behind us.

Just to clarify certain points about my phone conversation with him – his call came without warning as his number was not programmed in my phone directory. I told him I wasn’t feeling well and I wasn’t sure I was ready to talk to him. But I clearly remember thanking him for his call.

As I’ve said, this is not about me, but about the issue of rape not being an appropriate subject matter for comedy. Rape transcends age, economic class, gender — and even one’s weight.

Once again, I thank everyone who gave their support.”

ABS-CBN’s most controversial comedian, Vice Ganda, started his TV career as a stand-up comedian in GMA-7′s Comedy Central Market.

Back in 1999, Vice Ganda performed in GMA-7′s Sunday noontime musical variety show S.O.P. for the birthday celebration of Asia’s Songbird Regine Velasquez.

Then in 2007, the comedian became part of the network’s Comedy Central Market as one of the stand-up comedians of the show.

Earlier, Vice Ganda has been in hot water by humoring his fans with vulgar jokes directly pertaining to GMA 7 reporter Jessica Soho in his concert “I-Vice Ganda Mo ‘Ko sa Araneta” last May 17.

Can you differentiate his style of rendering funny entertainment before from his so-called “wisecracking”  jokes nowadays?

MTRCB summons Vice Ganda and 'GGV' writers over comedy bar humor

In a report by Interaksyon, a meeting was set on Wednesday with top gay comedian Vice Ganda and the writers of his weekly talk show “Gandang Gabi Vice.”

MTRCB chair Atty. Eugenio “Toto” Villareal said he will meet with representatives of all the major TV networks to discuss the use of comedy bar humor whose stock in trade is insult.

“Necessary element niya ‘yung paglalait from top to bottom, from head to foot or from foot to head. ‘Yung tinatawag na okrayan,” he said.

MTRCB mentioned that they have been receiving complaints about Vice and his show even before the latter’s controversial May 17 concert.

The ABS-CBN actor/host was recently in the hot seat for his offensive rape jokes about GMA news anchor Jessica Soho during the concert, which prompted him to issue a public apology on his noontime program “It’s Showtime” last week.

“Mahaba na talaga ang mga comment. So it’s fair to say that before the May 17 concert, so to speak, ay may natatanggap na kami. Kinakalap ito at due na talaga,” Villareal said.

It was very common for other comedians to throw lines in ways that can somehow insult or offense other people, but it only depends on how the person takes it. This is what comedians want the public to comprehend.

With this, MTRCB chair started to warn other comedians to be extra careful with their lines, especially when making fun of other people. He also challenged them to elevate their brand of comedy.

“We hope that the type of entertainment that we would have would always be in accord of the dignity of the human person,” he added.

The MTRCB will schedule the meeting with TV5 and GMA later this month.

The June 2, 2013 episode of GGV was also where Vice Ganda got emotional.

The two fondly calls each other “Baby Ge” and “Baby Rayray” and pokes sweetness like holding hands, hugging and pecking, but these two are just doing it for fun.

It was Rayver Cruz that convinced Gerald to give the entertainment industry a try even before Gerald tried for “Pinoy Big Brother”. The two became good buddies since 2006.

They also revealed they even share the same room whenever they have shows abroad.

After the meeting held last Wednesday with top gay comedian Vice Ganda and the writers of his weekly talk show “Gandang Gabi Vice,” the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) on Thursday thanked comedian Vice Ganda and ABS-CBN for their “cooperation” during a meeting called by the regulatory agency.

In a report by ABS-CBN News, the meeting tackled issues regarding the proper handling of “comedy bar humor” that is now being seen on television.

Issues involving the so-called “comedy bar humor” on television started after a controversy when Vice Ganda poked fun at broadcast journalist Jessica Soho’s weight in a sketch about celebrities as bold stars during his most recent concert.

ABS-CBN producers along with the comedian complied with the meeting on Wednesday together with MTRCB Board.

“The MTRCB thanks ABS-CBN & talent Jose Marie Viceral (Vice Ganda) for their cooperation & initiative @ yesterday’s meet,” the MTRCB said on its official Twitter account on Thursday morning.

The meeting discussed “the movement of comedy bar humor into television,” according to a series of tweets by the MTRCB.

“While noting the wit of comedy bar humor, the MTRCB emphasized the dos & don’ts for TV to ABS-CBN execs & talent Viceral,” it said.

MTRCB chairman Eugenio “Toto” Villareal said “comedy bar humor” should be regulated to protect children who might see these shows.

The board also “oriented” Vice Ganda and ABS-CBN on laws protecting women, children, PWDs and seniors citizens, as well as on “Broadcast Code norms” during Wednesday’s meeting.

It added that the meeting with ABS-CBN was “largely instructive.”

“Respect for human dignity at all times reiterated by MTRCB,” it said.

The board also told Ganda that he should stick to “wholesome” jokes on television.

“Avoiding potentially offensive humor off-cam disposes one to stick to wholesome humor on-cam, ABS team & Viceral told,” it said on Twitter.

“ABS & talent Viceral to review writing and gag delivery practices to conform MTRCB-enforced laws & rules.”

Comedians not in favor of MTRCB’s ‘comedy academy’

Some comedians are concerned about the suggestion of the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) to start up a “comedy academy” in the country.

Vice Ganda, who is recently in hot water for offending broadcast journalist Jessica Soho over his jokes, said he is not interested on the idea of persuading an institute where comedians would have to attend classes.

ABS-CBN producers along with the comedian recently complied with the meeting on Wednesday together with the MTRCB Board for a discussion on how to properly handly “comedy bar humor.”

READ: MTRCB to Vice Ganda: Stick to wholesome jokes

Meanwhile, another comedian reacted about the issue. For comedienne Giselle Sanchez, she said that it is not necessary to put up a “comedy academy.”

Sanchez added that comedians are intelligent people who can practice self-censorship.

“Halos lahat ng komedyante matatalino. Kaya naman namin ang self-censorship. Hindi naman siguro ako tatagal ng more than 20 years sa comedy kung hindi namin ine-exercise ang self-censorship. Chairman Toto, huwag niyo na ilagay ang comedy school,” she pleaded.

The concern of putting up a “comedy academy” was echoed by actress Anne Curtis, who has already worked with numerous comedians in her current and past projects.

“It’s a gift to have that kind of timing. But if it’s like a coming out workshop with the MTRCB lang, eh ‘di sige,” she said.

Vice Ganda began taping for the primetime series on Wednesday night and will finally be working again with his friend Coco Martin after the independent film “Noy.”

It was reported earlier that they had a rift when Martin declined Vice Ganda’s request to appear on his weekly show “Gandang Gabi Vice” because of his busy schedule only to see Martin being interviewed on “Bandila.” They already patched things up when the latter had a surprised appearance at the “I-Vice Ganda Mo ‘Ko sa Araneta” concert last May 17.

However, Vice stressed that he will not be a regular in the series because of his busy schedule. Apart from the noontime show “It’s Showtime” and the weekly show “Gandang Gabi Vice,” Vice Ganda is also working on the movie “Girl Boy Bakla Tomboy” for this year’s Metro Manila Film Festival.

Despite busy schedules and appointments, the comedian/host insisted that he should always have a time to unwind and enjoy the blessings he receives.

Balance of everything,” he explained.

Meanwhile, viewers are yet to discover if Santana will be Juan’s enemy or ally.

“Bekikang” lead actor Joey Paras is flattered whenever he is being compared to comedian Vice Ganda.

'Bekikang' star Joey Paras on issue with Vice Ganda

RIVALS? ‘Bekikang’ star Joey Paras speaks up on issue with Vice Ganda.

“Hindi ko alam [saan nanggaling], actually napa-flatter talaga ako na mai-compare kay Vice kasi milya-milya ‘yung layo ng narating ni Vice,” he said.

According to the gay actor, he is not close to Vice Ganda but had worked together on some projects.

Sana naalala ni Vice, sana,” he said.

Paras is currently promoting his first mainstream movie “Bekikang: Ang Nanay Kong Beki,” which is directed by Wenn Deramas, who also directed Vice Ganda’s box office hits, “Praybeyt Benjamin” and “Sisterakas.”

“Bekikang”, inspired by Lino Brocka’s 1978 film “Ang Tatay Kong Nanay,” is about the struggles of a gay single parent, who has an adopted son, Potpot (JM Ibañez).

Produced by Viva Films, “Bekikang: Ang Nanay Kong Beki“ will open in theaters nationwide on October 23.
